  Charles J.  Homcy, M.D.

Dr. Homcy is President and Chief Executive Officer, and co-founder of Portola Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a private biopharmaceutical company focused on novel therapeutics for acute and chronic cardiovascular and vascular disease. Dr. Homcy was previously at Millennium Pharmaceuticals, where he served initially as President, Research and Development and from January 2003 to November 2003, as Senior Research and Development Advisor. Prior to that he served as Executive Vice President, Research and Development of COR Therapeutics, Inc. from 1995 ,,and as a director from January 1998, until the company’s acquisition by Millennium Pharmaceuticals in 2002.
Since 1997, Dr. Homcy has been a Clinical Professor of Medicine, University of California at San Francisco Medical School and an attending physician at the San Francisco VA Hospital. From 1994 until 1995, Dr. Homcy was President of the medical research division of American Cyanamid Company-Lederle Laboratories (now a division of Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories). From 1990 until 1994, Dr. Homcy was Executive Director of the cardiovascular and central nervous system research section at Lederle Laboratories. From 1991 to 1995, Dr. Homcy also served as Clinical Professor of Medicine at The Presbyterian Hospital, College of Physicians and Surgeons, at Columbia University in New York. From 1979 to 1990, he was an attending physician at Massachusetts General Hospital and an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Homcy is a member of the Board of Directors of Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Cytokinetics, Kosan Biosciences and Geron.

Dr. Homcy has served on a number of major committees; including: Research Committee—Massachusetts General Hospital, the Massachusetts Heart Associate Affiliate Grants Review Committee, the New York State Heart Associate Scientific Council Review Committee, the Parent Review Committee—NIH SCOR Grants in Ischemia, the Heart Failure and Sudden Death, Cardiovascular-Pulmonary Study Section—NIH, and the Clinical Trials Review Committee, among others. He is a member of the American Federation for Clinical Research, the American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association—both the Council on Clinical Cardiology and the Council on Basic Science, and the American Society for Clinical Investigation. Dr. Homcy has served on the editorial boards of a number of publications, including Circulation Research, American Journal of Physiology, and Trends in Cardiovascular Medicine.

Dr. Homcy received his B.A. and his M.D. degrees from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
