Novalar Pharmaceuticals Inc., privately held, is developing a novel product in the area of local dental anesthesia. A typical side effect in local dental anesthesia is a lingering numbness in the lips, cheek and tongue. The lingering “soft tissue” anesthesia may last for several hours post-procedure, causing patients to lose work hours or accidentally bite into numbed soft tissue. The company’s product is a local anesthetic reversal agent (LARA).
Novalar seeks to accelerate soft tissue recovery time by up to 75% by administering an injection of LARA into the soft tissue upon completion of a procedure requiring local anesthetic. LARA consists of a small dose of phentolamine-mesylate, a drug currently approved by the FDA, in high-dose formulation, for the treatment of hypertension in pheochromocytoma patients.
Reports indicate that as much as 90% of dental procedures require local anesthetic, and at least 75% of local dental anesthetics contain a vasoconstrictor, a compound such as epinephrine that constricts blood vessels around the point of injection. There are roughly 250 million office visits a year where dental anesthesia is given, and roughly 2/3 of these visits are candidates for LARA. The vasoconstrictor helps prevent the dissipation of an anesthetic thus prolonging its numbing effects for up to several hours. Novalar seeks to accelerate recovery in the soft tissue in procedures where patients would otherwise be inconvenienced by the prolonged anesthetic effect.
